We’ve all heard the warning: don’t text and drive. But new research shows that texting is just one piece of a much bigger problem. In recognition of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we’re shedding light on some eye-opening data that highlights just how distracted drivers have become, and how dangerous it is making our roads.

Life 360, a popular family safety app that allows users to share locations and driving insights, analyzed 60 billion data points, and surveyed 1,000 U.S. drivers about distracted driving.

Here are some concerning results:

  • 86% of drivers admitted to being distracted by technology.
  • 37% of drivers reported scrolling on social media while behind the wheel.
  • 42% of Gen Z drivers say they watch videos online while driving.

More than half of millennials and a quarter of Gen X admitted to texting while driving.

Being distracted behind the wheel goes beyond technology. Even if you are not looking at your phone, you may still be putting yourself and others at risk.

  • 27% of drivers admitted to putting on makeup, changing their clothes, shaving, and even painting their nails while driving.
  • 72% confessed to eating difficult and distracting meals such as soup and BBQ.

The study also revealed the top 5 dangerous driving hotspots, with Riverside, California ranking as No. 1. Check out the infographic from Life360 below.

Drivers aged 17-20 currently have the highest crash rates of all generations. We highly encourage you to talk with your teens about the importance of staying focused behind the wheel.

Miguel Custodio of CD Law says, “I’ve seen first hand how quickly a distraction can turn into tragedy. Remember, your life, and your loved ones lives’ are far more valuable than any video or notification. Get home safe, then press play.”
