At CD Law, we’re proud to be supporting Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month this May. Whether you’re a motorcyclist or a driver sharing the road, we all carry the responsibility of making our streets safer. Motorcyclists, regardless of experience, are among the most vulnerable road users. Just one small mistake by a rider or driver can result in life-changing consequences. This month is an important reminder to slow down, stay alert, and make road safety a priority for yourself and those riding alongside you.
Spreading motorcycle safety awareness is the first step towards saving lives. The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is a powerful reminder of why awareness and safety matter so much:
6,335 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes, accounting for 15% of all traffic fatalities.
The fatality rate for motorcyclists was 28 times higher than for passenger car occupants (per 100 million vehicle miles traveled)
36% of motorcyclists in fatal crashes were speeding, compared to 22% of passenger car drivers.
Among riders aged 21 to 24, speeding was involved in 54% of fatal crashes.
Of 2,171 riders who died in single-vehicle crashes, 41% were alcohol-impaired
The good news? Helmet use is up:
Riders: 66.5% in 2022 to 73.8% in 2023
Riders with passengers: from 58.3% in 2022 to 72.3% in 2023
Motorcyclists and drivers alike should never drive under the influence, always wear proper safety gear, and follow the speed limit and rules of the road to protect themselves and everyone around them.
Unfortunately, insurance companies often try to shift blame onto injured motorcyclists in the case of an accident due to a stereotype of reckless and fast riding. This can make motorcycle cases much more complicated than typical car accident claims. That is why it is important to have an aggressive personal injury attorney on your side.
At CD Law, our Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers bring 50 years of experience handling complex motorcycle cases. We understand the unique challenges riders face, including:
Unfair bias against riders
Complex liability issues
Higher medical and recovery costs

Miguel Custodio of CD Law says, “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month isn’t just about reminding riders to wear helmets, it’s about reminding everyone that lives depend on our attention to safety. This month we honor the lives of riders we’ve lost and work to protect those still out there every day. I’ve stood beside far too many families after life-changing crashes. Let’s all do our part to look out for each other this month and every month!”
