National Safety Month Spotlight: LA’s Most Dangerous Intersections

June is National Safety Month, a nationwide campaign led by the National Safety Council (NSC) to raise awareness about leading causes of preventable injury and death. The NSC reported that in 2023, the United States experienced 222,698 preventable deaths and 62 million injuries. This year, we’re joining the effort to raise safety awareness by focusing on one of Los Angeles’ most common, yet overlooked hazards: dangerous intersections.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, one-quarter of all fatal traffic collisions and half of all injury-related traffic accidents happen in intersections. These are places most of us pass through every day without a second thought, but they’re also where some of the most devastating collisions occur. That’s why we’re shining light on the most dangerous intersections in our home city of Los Angeles, and sharing safety tips that could help prevent serious injuries or worse.

The Five Most Dangerous Intersections in Los Angeles

Based on LAPD data analyzed by MoneyGeek, here are the intersections with the highest number of crashes that resulted in injury between 2020 and 2022:

  • S. Vermont Ave. & W. Florence Ave. – 19 crashes
  • W. Manchester Ave. & S. Normandie Ave. – 18 crashes
  • Victory Blvd. & Lindley Ave. – 18 crashes
  • W. Manchester Ave. & S. Vermont Ave. – 18 crashes
  • E. Manchester Ave. & Avalon Blvd. – 18 crashes

It’s notable that four of these five intersections are located in South Central Los Angeles, highlighting a community facing greater risk of injury.

Intersection Safety Tips

Whether you’re walking, driving, or biking, intersections require your full attention. Here are some key safety reminders to help you avoid dangerous situations:

Stay alert. Put the phone away and stay aware of your surroundings. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents. Whether it’s texting or eating, anything that pulls your full attention away from the intersection puts you at risk.

Slow down. Extra caution and reduced speed can give you more time to react to unexpected hazards.

Use designated areas. Pedestrians should cross at marked crosswalks, utilize sidewalks, and drivers should yield appropriately.

Never assume others see you. Whether you’re a driver or pedestrian, look both ways before crossing through an intersection

Do not walk or drive under the influence. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 47% of crashes that resulted in a pedestrian fatality, the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol. And of course, driving under the influence is illegal!

Miguel Custodio of CD Law says, “By spreading awareness during National Safety Month, we hope to prevent more injuries and keep our streets safer for our community. If you or a loved one has been injured at one of these intersections, or anywhere else, we’re here to help.”

Let’s work together to make LA’s roads safer for everyone, and support the NSC’s efforts to spread awareness and stop preventable injuries and fatalities.
