Tragic Lake Tahoe Boat Accident Claims 8 Lives

On Saturday, June 21, 2025, a sudden and violent storm on Lake Tahoe led to the capsizing of a 27-foot Chris-Craft powerboat near D.L. Bliss State Park. The boat was carrying ten individuals who were celebrating the 71st birthday of Paula Bozinovich. The storm brought wind gusts up to 45 mph and waves reaching 8 to 10 feet, overwhelming the vessel.

Among the eight victims were:

  • Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, of San Francisco, a DoorDash executive
  • Terry Pickles, 73, and Paula Bozinovich, 71, of Redwood City
  • Peter Bayes, 72, of Lincoln
  • Timothy O’Leary, 71, of Auburn
  • Theresa Giullari, 66, and James Guck, 69, of Honeoye, New York
  • Stephen Lindsay, 63, of Springwater, New York

Two individuals survived the incident and were hospitalized. The boat was owned by Josh Pickles and his wife, who, along with their 7-month-old child, remained onshore during the outing.

Legal Perspective: Understanding the Implications

This tragic event raises important questions about boating safety and liability. In California, boat operators have a duty to ensure the safety of their passengers. Failure to adhere to safety regulations, such as monitoring weather conditions and ensuring the availability of life jackets, can lead to legal consequences.

While the storm was sudden, investigators will examine whether the boat was equipped with necessary safety gear and if the operator took appropriate precautions. Determining liability in such cases can be complex, involving factors like equipment maintenance, operator experience, and adherence to safety protocols.
