Stanley Recalls 2.6 Million Mugs Due to Burn Hazard

The holiday season is in full swing, a time for both gift giving and receiving. As we shop for this year’s most popular items, it’s more important than ever to stay informed about product safety.

Popular travel cup and mug brand, Stanley 1913, has issued a recall of 2.6 million of their stainless steel travel mugs following reports of lids detaching during use, leading to dozens of burn injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has documented 91 incidents globally, including 16 in the U.S., resulting in 38 burn injuries, with 11 cases requiring medical attention.

Recalled Products

The recalled cups were manufactured in multiple different colors and were sold from June 2016 to December 2024.

  • Switchback Travel Mugs: 12 oz. (Product ID: 20-01437) and 16 oz. (Product IDs: 20-01436, 20-02211)
  • Trigger Action Travel Mugs: 12 oz. (Product IDs: 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825), 16 oz. (Product IDs: 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957), and 20 oz. (Product IDs: 20-02034, 20-02746)

They were available at major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target.

Stanley’s Been in the Spotlight Before

Unfortunately this isn’t the first time Stanley has found itself in hot water this year. Back in February, the brand faced scrutiny after reports surfaced about lead contamination in some of its popular drinking products. Consumers and safety advocates raised concerns about the potential health risks, prompting widespread attention and discussions about product safety and transparency. Stanley later admitted to lead being present, as part of their manufacturing process for the insulation of the cup. The company sought to assure consumers that “no lead is present on the surface of any Stanley product that comes into contact with the consumer nor the contents of the product.”

Vineet Dubey of Custodio & Dubey says, “This Stanley recall is a perfect example of why we need to stay vigilant, not just with new holiday purchases, but with products we already own. It’s always a good idea to check for product recalls and safety notices, especially during the holidays when we’re buying gifts for the people we care about most.”
